It’s been well over a decade since Tether’s flagship stablecoin was born on Bitcoin; few remember its launch, as most were introduced to it it on an altcoin chain like Ethereum and TRON, but back in 2014, USDT launched on the Omni Layer, a Bitcoin-based protocol, before congestion and high fees drove it to Ethereum and later Tron, where roughly 92% of USDT supply now resides.
In August 2025, Tether announced it would bring USDT back to its original home through RGB Protocol, a client-side validation system for issuing digital assets on Bitcoin. With RGB v0.11.1 reaching mainnet and UTEXO — backed by a $7.5 million Tether-led funding round — leading commercial deployment, a launch is expected imminently.
UTEXO is a joint venture involving Viktor’s Boosty Venture Studio, Fulgur Ventures, and Tether Investments.
It’s not really something new for the stablecoin owner; Tether has backed pretty much every attempt to add another layer to Bitcoin. Tether is already available on the Liquid Network, and they’ve planned to issue USDT on Taproot assets too.
Liquid Tether, like L-BTC, hasn’t really generated much interest and use among retail users, but it’s worth stepping back and asking whether this time is different. Will this be a genuine turning point for Bitcoin’s role in payments, or another chapter in a long pattern of announcements that don’t quite translate into usage?
Tether’s Scattered Bitcoin Bets
As mentioned, the RGB push isn’t Tether’s first attempt to plant USDT on Bitcoin’s various layers, and understanding that history matters for setting expectations.
Liquid Network: Tether has issued USDT on Blockstream’s Liquid sidechain for years, giving traders and exchanges a faster, more confidential settlement rail than mainchain Bitcoin. Liquid USDT sees genuine use among OTC desks and some exchanges, but it remains a niche corner of the stablecoin market compared to Tron or Ethereum.
Taproot Assets: Tether previously stated it would roll out USDT on Lightning Labs’ Taproot Assets protocol, enabling stablecoin transfers over the Lightning Network itself. This rollout did happen — completed in March 2026 — but it has seen limited real-world traction. Wallet support remains thin, and liquidity for Taproot Assets channels is a fraction of what exists on Tron.
Spark: USDT is also available on Spark, a newer Bitcoin layer-2 protocol focused on statechains and instant settlement. As with Taproot Assets, availability hasn’t translated into meaningful volume — most users and traders still default to Tron for cost reasons and Ethereum for DeFi composability.
The pattern across all of these is consistent: technical rollout happens, headlines get written, and then adoption stalls far below expectations. USDT’s dominance in the altcoin space — overwhelmingly on Tron, where transfers are cheap and infrastructure is mature — hasn’t meaningfully budged despite three separate Bitcoin-native issuance paths now existing (Liquid, Taproot Assets, Spark) before RGB even launches.
What Makes RGB Different, in Theory
RGB uses client-side validation — asset state and transaction history are verified directly between the parties involved rather than broadcast to the entire network, which keeps contract data off-chain and private while still anchoring ownership to Bitcoin’s UTXO set. Combined with Lightning, this is meant to enable instant, low-cost, private USDT transfers without needing a separate blockchain or a separate token to pay fees.
That last point is the more interesting one for everyday users. Anyone who has moved USDT on Tron knows the friction of needing TRX for gas, or on Ethereum needing ETH. RGB payments settle over Lightning using Bitcoin’s own fee market, meaning a user could theoretically hold BTC and USDT side-by-side and transact in either without acquiring a third asset just to cover transaction costs.
For peer-to-peer markets in particular — where speed and finality of settlement between BTC and USDT is often the whole point of a trade — instant Lightning-based settlement removes a meaningful pain point that currently requires trusting an exchange order book or waiting on-chain confirmations.

Why Adoption Will Take Time Regardless
Even assuming RGB v0.11.1 works exactly as designed, there are structural reasons to expect a slow ramp rather than an overnight shift in stablecoin flows.
Wallet and exchange integration is still early. Tether Wallet and a handful of exchanges are expected to support the launch, but the vast majority of stablecoin users interact with USDT through centralised exchanges, Tron-based wallets like TronLink, or Ethereum-compatible wallets. Getting mainstream wallets and altcoin-native platforms to add RGB support is a multi-quarter (if not multi-year) integration effort, not a switch that flips at launch.
Liquidity doesn’t appear on command. A stablecoin is only as useful as the depth of markets willing to trade it. Tron’s dominance exists because liquidity providers, market makers, and arbitrageurs have spent years building infrastructure there. RGB-based USDT starts from zero liquidity, and bootstrapping meaningful order book depth or Lightning channel capacity takes sustained incentive, not just technical availability.
Users go where the path of least resistance already is. As Bitfinex and others have noted, prior Bitcoin-native USDT efforts (Liquid, Taproot Assets, Spark) demonstrate that simply making a rail available doesn’t create demand. Habits, existing balances, and network effects on Tron are powerful inertia that a new protocol has to actively out-compete on cost, speed, or a genuinely new use case — not just parity.
RGB itself is young. The protocol only reached mainnet with v0.11.1 in July 2025. New financial infrastructure handling billions in stablecoin value typically needs a runway of real-world testing, security audits, and incremental trust-building before institutions commit serious volume to it.
The AI Angle: 402 and Machine-to-Machine Payments
One underrated reason this matters beyond typical P2P and remittance use cases is the emerging demand for machine-payable infrastructure. As AI agents increasingly need to pay for API calls, compute, and token usage autonomously, the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” protocol has attracted renewed interest as a standard for instant, small, machine-to-machine settlement. Projects are already experimenting with agents that top up stablecoin balances automatically to keep workflows running without human intervention.
A Bitcoin-anchored, Lightning-settled USDT is a plausible fit for this world: sub-second finality, fees that don’t require holding a separate gas token, and settlement final enough that an API provider doesn’t need to trust a promise of payment.
If AI agents are going to transact with each other and with services thousands of times a day, the cost and complexity of holding multiple gas tokens across multiple chains becomes a real bottleneck — one that Lightning-native stablecoin rails could genuinely solve better than existing options.
Same, same, Just The Settlement Layer is Different
Tether’s RGB push is technically credible and solves real problems — no separate gas token, instant Lightning settlement, better privacy than fully transparent chains. But credibility on paper hasn’t been enough for Liquid, Taproot Assets, or Spark to meaningfully dent Tron’s grip on stablecoin volume, and there’s no obvious reason RGB escapes that same gravity on day one.
The more realistic outlook is a slow build: useful immediately for a subset of P2P traders and Bitcoin-native users who value instant BTC/USDT settlement without touching an altcoin, and potentially far more significant down the line if AI-driven machine payments turn out to need exactly the kind of low-friction, multi-asset Lightning rail RGB is trying to build.
